- Full Description:
Cartagena was settled in 223 BC and flourished under Roman rule. Cartagena offers a vast cultural legacy acquired over 3000 years and offers numerous cultural possibilities to discover. Visit the Punic Wall and discover the Carthaginian age ruins and original foundation of the city. Constructed after Hellenistic fortification structures, the wall has stood the test of time. Witness the recovery of the wall remains that defended the primitive Qart-Hadasht, present Cartagena.
Proceed to the Roman Theater. Its discovery and excavation have become one of the greatest unexpected contributions to Spanish archeology in recent history. The restoration of the roman ruins has become the driving force behind the regeneration of one of the forgotten areas of the city and the building has quickly become an essential part of the old town’s landscape. The quality of its materials; its bases, its cornices, and especially its capitals, demonstrate the importance of the building. The theater restoration was made according to the original design. In order to reduce the material impact, authentic materials were used and contemporary Roman techniques were employed wherever possible. While visiting the theater, pass through the Roman Museum, which documents the history of the monument with a display of artifacts unearthed during the excavation. Learn about the complex process to reclaim this forgotten Roman building, buried for centuries until its discovery at the end of the 90´s.
Continue from the theatre to the Alfonso XII pier. Begin your walking tour along the sea wall, with its magnificent views over the harbor, to reach the Town Hall square and the “Consistorial Palace”, the City Council. It is a sumptuous triangular-shaped palace with a different treatment on each façade. The interior design is primarily modernist, with paintings and decorative details throughout.
Continue to the main avenue of Calle Mayor, where modernism is present in every doorway, every window and in every building along the pedestrian area leading into the heart of the city. Admire the modernist buildings from the beginning of the XIX century. Pass the Cassino, Cervantes House, Grand Hotel and Casa maestre, one of the first in the city, with its modernist balconies and beautiful viewpoints.
- The possibilities to enter different sites is huge, some of them are of free entrance but the most interesting ones involve to buy tickets. Our suggestion is to get a four-centres ticket for the group price of 9€ per person which may include the entry to Roman Theatre, Roman Forum and Punic Wall
